When it comes to choosing the right fence for your garden the prospect can be a little daunting sometimes. There are many different types of fences, and if you want to have a clear idea on what the names refer to there isn’t really much of a guide. It can help to know what fence goes well with a particular garden in order to make the most of your purchase.

Perhaps the most common type of fence today is the edge fence. This is made up of horizontal planks set between durable posts. The planks are replaceable if damaged and easy to fit, which makes them a logical choice for many homeowners and businesses alike. If you want to make the design a little more cosy you can add a top trellis, allowing you to customise the boundary with your own plants, and make for a wonderful summer garden feature.

Closeboard is similar to edge fence in that it’s a fairly common set of wooden plank and join fitting, but in this case the planks are arranged vertically. This is a good look in a narrow space of garden, such as a city garden. You can also get domed closeboard fence, which adds a rising curve to the top of each section of boundary for a more ornate effect.

You might know palisade fencing by another name. Picket fence is the way Americans would put it, and the name is synonymous with homely gardens and front lawns with plenty of light. For a house that’s more secluded you might consider this design, as you’re not deterring people as much, and get to enjoy a natural view of the landscape, and supply openness to a small garden. Integrating hedges with palisade fencing is great for a country cottage look.

For a high-end fence with a unique look you can try weave pressure fences. These have a far-eastern look to them, and are inspired by Asian woven baskets. They have thin layers of wood, woven in a tight lattice that creates a picturesque and durable border. Alternatively you could also have entirely trellis fences to promote a plant-centred boundary with an ornate look to it.

I bet you didn’t know that there were so many different types of fence panels available!
